Sound experts’ perspectives on astronomy sonification projects

چکیده
The Audible Universe project aims at making dialogue between two scientific domains investigating distinct research objects, briefly said, Stars and Sound. It has been instantiated within a collaborative workshop that started to mutually acculturate both communities, by sharing transmitting respective knowledge, skills practices. One main outcome of this exchange was global view on the astronomical data sonification paradigm allowed observe either diversity tools, uses users (including visually-impaired people), but also current limitations potential ways improvement. From perspective, paper presents basic elements gathered contextualised sound experts in their fields (sound perception / cognition, design, psychoacoustics, experimental psychology), order anchor for astronomy more well-informed, methodological creative process.

Data sonification and sound visualization
This article describes a collaborative project between researchers in the Mathematics and Computer Science Division at Argonne National Laboratory and the Computer Music Project of the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign. The project focuses on the use of sound for the exploration and analysis of complex data sets in scientific computing. The article addresses digital sound synthesis in t...
متن کاملMotion-sound Interaction Using Sonification based on Motiongrams
The paper presents a method for sonification of human body motion based on motiongrams. Motiongrams show the spatiotemporal development of body motion by plotting average matrices of motion images over time. The resultant visual representation resembles spectrograms, and is treated as such by the new sonifyer module for Jamoma for Max, which turns motiongrams into sound by reading a part of the...
متن کاملTrends in Software for Large Astronomy Projects
Current 8-10m ground-based telescopes require complex real-time control systems that are large, distributed, fault tolerant, integrated and heterogeneous. New challenges on the horizon (laser guide star, adaptive optics, 30–40m class telescopes) will bring increased complexity, where requirements cannot be cleanly isolated due to component coupling within the control and acquisition chain. More...
متن کاملSolar System Sonification: Exploring Earth and Its Neighbors through Sound
Informal learning environments (ILEs) like museums incorporate multi-modal displays into their exhibits as a way to engage a wider group of visitors, often relying on tactile, audio, and visual means to accomplish this. Planetariums, however, represent one type of ILE where a single, highly visual presentation modality is used to entertain, inform, and engage a large group of users in a passive...
متن کاملSonification Mapping Configurations: Pairings of Real-time Exhibits and Sound
Visitors to aquariums typically rely on their vision to interact with live exhibits that convey rich descriptive and aesthetic visual information. However, some visitors may prefer or need to have an alternative interpretation of the exhibitÕs visual scene to improve their experience. Musical sonification has been explored as an interpretive strategy for this purpose and related work provides s...
